Each year Ilkley & District Good Neighbours organise two excursions for older residents of the district which take place during Spring and Summer.

The Summer sunshine was clearly shining on our most recent trip when residents enjoyed a scenic drive into the Yorkshire Dales followed by afternoon tea at Bolton Abbey Cavendish Pavilion Cafe. As usual the afternoon tea was delicious and afterwards some of the guests took the opportunity to visit the Gift Shop to make a few purchases.

The aim of these excursions is simply to enable older residents the opportunity to get out of their homes and to interact with other people. “Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” said excursion organiser Anita Dunford. “I think it’s so important that our elderly residents are able to access the Yorkshire countryside with many of our guests recalling times they had spent with their families enjoying days walking or picnicking in the Dales”.

The buses used for the excursions are supplied by Ilkley Community Transport, and Good Neighbours would like to thank volunteer drivers John Bray and Peter Kierman for arranging the scenic route into the Dales and to our own volunteers Joan Sumner, Judy Hutton, Adrienne Heavisides, Josephine Loughran and Yvonne Kierman for their help in assisting with this year’s excursions.

The excursion scheme, which is free for guests, was started eight years ago has proved to be immensely popular with older residents who love the countryside but find that they can no longer access it on their own. Funding of the excursions is provided by personal donations, community collections and grants from various organisations such as-:

Greggs Charitable Trust 2011

Yorkshire Building Society 2013

Ilkley Carnival 2014
